  • Whats going on with my mushrooms, they just.... havent!

When monty done the mushroom spawn thing with the hay and the plastic black bags I done exactly the same thing, when they were kept in the dark for a bit they started to fruit and were skinny things with tiny caps, I brought them out (like monty said) and put them in the green house but now there is nothing. What do you recon Ive done?

We've had those kits, found them pretty rubbish so doubt it's anything you've done or not done.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Were the "skinny things with tiny caps" actually edible mushrooms? Were they brown or white?

I tried one of the kits one year, zilch, yadda, nothing! Rather than waste the compost I spread it on one of my greenhouse beds the following year. Had a smashing crop of large horse mushrooms that year!

I'm guessing that this is what Monty did - BBC Two - Gardeners' World, 2015, Episode 21, Grow your own mushrooms

The fungi he's growing looks like Oyster mushrooms so unless you've grown that spawn you won't have anything similar anyway.

Dined on home grown oyster mushrooms (fried in a little oil with elephant garlic, parsley and on sourdough toast). Good but not memorable.

              Yeah VC they were white...
I tried to grow oyster mushrooms and button mushrooms. Ive been told its better to grow them on horse manure is that right?

iv'e picked alot of srooms from the wild and when iv'e picked oysters they have all been growing on trees ,some quite high up ! so for my way of thinking I would grow them in wood chipings or bark from poplar or willow not straw .

all the best and Happy New Year Dal
