    Whats eating everything


    Noticed today something has eaten the top of a carrot see 1st picture exactly as I found it also a a radish had a chunk taken out see second picture. I suspect this is not from the same thing as the other pics which I suspect is a mixture of slugs snails and caterpillars there was no point in adding a picture of my lettuce as its vanished in the last few days (the netting was just to stop cats pooping in it and there are gaps around it so they don't keep anything out). Please can anyone tell me what most likely ate the carrot head and radish and confirm if the other damage is slugs snails and maybe caterpillars. I have always found the odd slug about and recently seem loads of white butterflies but never seen any caterpillars but did find 1 cluster of eggs.
    Should I harvest my carrots not before the rest get eaten they where planted in April?
    Thanks in advance for any help, note this is my 1st year of growing so its all new to me.

    Not sure about the carrot but the rest definitely looks like slug or snail damage. With the carrots why not try earthing them up a bit so the top of the carrot is hidden. They probably are about ready for harvesting, pull a few to see.

      I have the same thing attacking my beetroot. I reckon its a biiiig snail.

          This one carved a trench like the parting of the Red Sea right across the top of my biggest beetroot last night!

            Slugs/snails and possible flea beetle. The small holes in the leaves aren't much to worry about... if they're getting larger then it's something else rather than fleabeetle (caterpillar possibly, or slugs/snails).

              Thanks for the advice I just got my 1st ever carrot harvest, not the prettiest but there's 4 a good shape, I assume they taste the same anyway.

                  lol, I`m growing a few beets too,in pots, I have one that came out well 10cm wide.

                    looks good simon, I have some growing too,but really don`t know if the carrots are growing much underneath,i mainly grew them as my bunnies like to nibble the greens :-)

                      Go out at night with a torch and you'll probably see 100s. Put a pinch of salt on each one, and repeat every night until the population declines a bit.

                      tbh, the damage you've seen isn't a major problem (apart from the poor lettuce). A few bites out of leaves isn't anything to worry about: what you don't want however, is to let pest populations get out of control (so shake your brassicas to knock the caterpillars off, and crush them; do the slug patrol; and catch white butterflies in a fishing net).
