  • What's doing well....and what's not!

I was wondering how everyone is getting on with their crops. What's growing very well? What are you most proud of?

My chillis are going great guns. My spinach is romping away. Huge leaves. My pak choi is not! It's getting eaten by something. Small holes all over them all. I can't grow cucumbers!,!

    Loving my allotment!

    Going well:
Peas, Lettuce, Cucumbers, Toms, Cabbage (did lose 4 to rootfly though) Brussels, Potatoes, Japanese Onion, Red berry, Strawberrys.

    Not going well:
Chillies , Red onion (half bolting)

    Comming slowly:
    Carrots, Parsnips, leeks, Beans.

Not a bad year for me so far!

With the sunny hot weather coming early this year, no late frost, not too wet like last year.... I am finding everything has come on fantastically. Its only my second year and I guess it helps my raised beds have settled now (they were newly made last year) and I thought more about where the sun is and planted better.

      Going well:
Peas, Lettuce, Courgette, Rocket, Onions, Broad Beans, Sweetcorn, French Beans, Beetroot, Spring Onions, Strawberrys (literally loads and loads), redcurrants, new potatoes.

      Not too good:
Tomatoes in the greenhouse, first year guess I need to learn, peppers, aubergines (again all greenhouse), carrots in pots.

      Coming slowly so cant say:
Parsnip, Celeriac, Carrots, Autumn Raspberries, Leeks (really slow), Calabrese

Great idea for a thread Newton, it's so interesting to read everyone's achievements and progress, good and bad!

This is my first year growing so I guess everything is a bit of a trial. Key point: I'm enjoying it!

        Going well:
Proud of my tomatoes which are just starting to flower, beetroot, nasturtiums, carrots (I think!), potatoes, sweet peppers (not huge, no flowers yet, but promising)

        Not too good:
Pak choi bolted but I have left it to try and keep seed (and like you Newton something has nibbled holes all over it), now rainbow chard is bolting, baby spinach, spring onions

        Coming slowly:
Second sowing of cherry toms - don't know why they're not as wonderous as the first lot!
        Beans and snap peas

Gold star: strawberries, onions, runner beans, early potatoes, crown prince squash, sugar snap peas

Could do better: sweetcorns and minicorn (minicorn blasted by gales last week, still recovering), butternut squash, melons

Failed: gherkins (have planted more), parsnips (on second sowing, first lot were a no show!)

Radishes, courgette, one climbing bean, borage, rocket, cabbage, cauliflowers (but for how long I dont know!).

Spring onions, baby sweetcorn, aubergine, tomatoes doing ok ish but probably very behind everyone else's.

French beans have got wind burnt leaves and looking a bit ropey.

Going okay - tomatoes, potatoes, shallots, peas, carrots, parsnips, leeks, beetroot (all types), kale and burdock.

Iffy, very iffy looks like it's going to be a disaster - peppers (chilli and sweet - too cold and wet), beans, blueberries (strong winds), strawberries (where is the sunshine?)

Undecided - the rest of the fruit bushes, sugar pie pumpkins and BN squash.

                      Going well:
Gooseberries, radishes, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, turnips, runner beans, onions, potatoes, Kentucky Wonder Wax & Cosse Violetto French beans, spring onions, courgette, parsley, rosemary, pepper, oregano

                      Too early to tell:
Cauliflower, swede, 2nd rhubarb, liquorice, leeks, gherkins, cucumber, chives, thyme, red onion

                      Struggling a bit:
1st rhubarb, Trail of Tears French beans, celery (in its second year so no idea what'll happen to it!), mint

                      Dying:
                      Sage, lavender

Tomatoes and chillies all growing well but started a bit late so only just flowering - flowers not open yet.

Everything is going great guns except (there's always one) spring onions. The worst bit is I have no idea why.

Most things are going ok at the moment, though my blackcurrant bushes have just developed some sort of filament red rusty colour (they seem to get something different every year! ) on the leaves.
Peas are a bit slow to start, but they were a bit rootbound when I put them in initially, which won't be helping!

My french beans have yet to germinate and poke their heads up from the soil (I direct planted this year and will probably regret it) and the one that has seems very slow growing for some reason.

Coriander, parsley, strawberries and mizuna seem to be the best crops at the moment.
