What's the difference: carrots with numbers?

    What's the difference: carrots with numbers?

    I am probably missing something obvious here, but I have come across a few packets of carrot seeds with similar names, the only difference being a number. For example, I can find lots of retailers selling "Early Nantes 2", while other places sell "Early Nantes 5". I also have some "Royal Chantenay 3", but I have seen some "Royal Chantenay 2" available online.

    Can anyone explain to me what the difference is, please?

      This is just a guess, but I'm wondering if it refers to a newer, improved version of the same carrot.

        I have no idea, I just assumed it was a slightly different variation on a genetic theme, like windows 94 becoming windows 98

          On that basis the original carrots grow perfectly well but the later ones are unstble and fall over?

                Thanks for all the suggestions. I suppose it doesn't really matter; I'll plant the seeds and eat the carrots. I'm just one of those awkward souls who likes to understand everything.

                And thanks to COMPOST CORNER, I now know that if they get slugged I can always press CTRL-ALT-DEL to fix the problem!

                  They are different varieties, apparently. The exact differences between them I don't know!

                  Found this EU catalogue of all veg varieties (who knew?) which includes several varieties differentiated by number - not just carrots.

                    I planted a load of Amsterdam Forcing 3 today in with my spring onion buckets have no idea why they are a three but who cares when I get carrots in a few months time

                        I have my Early Nantes 5 (or was it 2?) planted along with my Royal Chantenay 3 so I will just forget about the numbers now and enjoy the harvest.
