  • What's the best point to pick Plum Tomatos?

Some of mine have turned orange and few red. I'd like them as sweet of possible. should I leave them a while to built the sugars or are they good as soon as they're red? Oh! They're outside....
    Cheers.

I give them another day or 2 once they've turned from orange to red. Sometimes when I've picked them too quickly the outside is red but the insides are still a bit under ripe.

And just to confuse you, I pick them when they are just starting to turn from green to orange or whatever colour they are meant to be and let them ripen undercover. The plant can then put its energy into the remaining green ones.

Really depends on the variety and your taste buds. For sweet toms I grow Sun Gold during ripening these go fro green to a light yellow and eventually a deep orange that's when they are at there sweetest. When I think they are ready I give them a gentle squeeze if the tom is resistant to pressure it can stand another day or so.

I'm with Potty on this one - when they give with a squeeze they're ready.................however, not everyone agrees with me

I leave them until they turn red, then collect them all and turn them into passata!

I like to leave mine until they're ready to eat and easily come away from the plant.

Me too Bren, if they don't come away from the plant easily, I leave them until they do.
