  • What would you do?

I posted this a while ago and am still trying to decide what would be best

We're going off to get married and on honeymoon Feb 28-14 March.

So, do I start a few (say 6 of each) tomatoes and chillies a few weeks before and then leave them hoping they will survive?

I'm hoping to start some celeriac and parsnips tomorrow so they will get plonked outside with lots of crossed fingers.

Or do I just sow most everything when I get back?

15 March definitely isn't too late, and better imo than leaving things to housesitters

Hi BK - you are only 38 miles from me. If you need a plant auntie let me know. No greenhouse but I have a plastic blow away and a growhouse. Depends on how many plants and how big they are! Or if you like I can sow a few extras for you!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

        aw jeanied, I'm so touched!

Thanks TS, that's what I thought, the weather has been awful this winter too....but I'm starting to feel left out with everyone sowing things *jealousy is a terrible thing*

I think most of us get itchy fingers to sow things asap but in my experience, things I've optimistically sown early end up only a tiny bit further on than things sown in milder months.

I would get the seed trays and compost ready for mid March but in the meatime forget about it all and focus on your big day and lovely honeymoon
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

            I usually sow mid march
growing them on early is fine if you have a space and light and heat for them, but I don't.
so don't panic, it's not too late at all.

Nothing to add, as I'm not going to sow before that, just a big congratulations!

As TS said, the 15 March isn't too late to get things under way. I've found in the past that early sown veg takes time to get growing where as later sowing just grow.

Honestly???...I'd treat myself to some plug plants when i got back.
It'd be one less thing to think/worry about!!

Sow when you get back. I start a few chillies off early but the toms tend to do better in general when they don't get a growth check and the March sowings just get on with it.

                    Have a lovely time!

I didn't even think about buying plants! Going to investigate now and see if I can get them to deliver past a certain time...

Thank you all! certainly made me feel better about not sowing before march.

I just need to remember to keep sitting on my hands until then.

Oh, that's where it went! Don't let Fi see it, or she'll be round here with it in a flash!

                          Congrats, BK, by the way.

Congratulations BK - I'm sure you will have a lovely time away.

Now - with regards to sitting on your hands - why not try sprouting seeds for a few weeks?

And don't forget - from one tomato you can pinch out the side shoots and get a new plant for each one that you use as a cutting. So, you won't actually have to buy many at all.

You could ask a chum for any side shoots after they have done all the hard work!

That's a thought - we could have a side shoot challenge - how many productive plants from one original plant in the same season?
