  • what will you sow early/late

As we are approaching the shortest day ( by daylight VC) I am feeling impatient to start sowing seeds, as there are different weather conditions within Britain, what and when do you start sowing your veg seeds
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I think I will try some later sowing next year, as all the tomatoes I started in the heated propagator this year had very thin stalks, and all collapsed under the weight of the forming fruits. Last year’s started in greenhouse, and the self seeded one in the compost heap were much sturdier, and more productive!

I never stop sowing seeds, rary
Last year I sowed a couple of windowsill tomatoes on December 27th - and I'll do the same this year - if I can be patient that long!

I will start off my chilli seeds on January 1st.
I will also sow spring onion seeds.
Sweet peas will be on that list as well.
All will be started in my heated propagator and kept on a sunny window sill. ( HOPEFULLY)

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I plan to sow my onions, peppers and toms at the beginning of the year. Whether this turns out to be the astronomical, calender or financial year I'll have to see.

in a fit of bored daftness I started an experiment starting off some old kelsae and ailsa craig onion seeds in 3" pots indoors under lights in november. starting some pepper seeds in a propagator now then will join the onions under grow lights,

I freely admit to eagerness overpowering sense

I've already got onions, peas and broad beans in.
The germination rate of the peas was pretty poor, unless 1) lots of them objected to a blasted moggie deciding that the bed was an ideal toilet or 2) we've got mice that I haven't spotted.
The broad beans were doing well until the sharp frosts last week, some seem to be recovering so my fingers are crossed.

As to other sowings, I've learnt from last year and won't be sowing them right at the very start of the period printed on the packets. That said, I have invested in a grow light so hopefully even with only slightly later sowings I won't get loads of weak, leggy seedlings this year.

Will probably sow more lettuce but that's about it until Feb, I've got a couple of self seeded toms I dug out my GH bed they're now 2in tall be interesting to see how they do on the bedroom window sill.

I've already sown lettuces, carrots and leeks for indoor growing and have a foot high tomato plant (from a sideshoot) under lights that will go on the windowsill soon.

January is lettuces and indoor tomatoes.
February is tomatoes and snackbite peppers for growing indoors, plus beetroot, early peas and spinach. I plant out my onion sets and for the last couple of years first early potatoes in February, but that will depend a bit on the weather as there would be no point in doing this if it was very cold.

It is very possible that this year winter and early spring will be rather colder than the last few years (which have generally been exceptionally warm), so plans are fluid until I can see what the weather trends are nearer the time.

Chilli seeds ( some of them ) already sown. They're the only things I start early. Depending on variety they get sown Dec, Jan & Feb.

I try and resist starting things until spring.
And thus not have to put any heating in GH (Scrooge)
I also try to convince myself to buy plants such as Aldis chillis etc, again to avoid early heating.
But I am very weak willed so will probably sow something.

Last year VC held the a - z flower seed sowing challenge in January,I had some early flowering borage & cornflower etc,I used artificial lighting & some of the plants that did well were French marigolds, they flowered earlier which was good keeping the odd whitefly away from my potato leaves, put a little pot in a few bags,so I'll start about twenty or so marigolds early January, the bees will enjoy them too. Some of the seedlings didn't do well,so I know not to sow some things. I'll start several sweet peppers & a couple of tomatoes in January too. This is the first time I've sat down & thought about it,there could be extras I need to shuffle through my seed packets

I shall sit on my hands until I see what the new year brings.

I do like to get my new spuds in the frost free green house mid to late Feb but the rest is weather dependant.

I shall do my best to conceur the urge to sow seed until feb, when it will be broard beans in several trays, harden off then plant out when hopefully warmer, most things catch up eventualy anyway.
