  • What spuds have lasted?

We grew a few varieties this summer which had to be lifted quite early due to blight...anyway of the varieties we planted the one still mainly 'solid' is anya - we'll be eating some on Xmas day. Ratte weren't too bad either...

What variety of spud, will you be eating at Xmas, that has grown & kept well for you?

I have stored PFA, Valor, Romano and Charlotte. I know that as second earlies the Charlotte shouldn't really store but they're fine. They've all been in hessian sacks in the garage since I dug them up in about September and are all fine. Had a load of Valor tonight and PFA last night. Not going to be eating any of them on Christmas Day as am eating at my mum's but if I'd been cooking, any of them would have been fine.

Note I was lucky and all my spuds avoided blight so didn't have to harvest too early.

The ground on my field is very free draining and dry and I am still lifting Duke of York, Charlotte and Rooster. We shall be eating Rooster (roasted) and Charlotte (boiled) on Christmas Day. There is no slug damage to speak of but the mice are starting to eat a few tubers here and there.

A couple of votes for Charlotte, might try them again next yr as I like their taste. Lets hope for less blight so they can stay in the ground longer!

Just started the Nicola in store. Although they are quite waxy, they still make quite good roastie.

Mind you, some have started to sprout - can only assume it was the warm autumn that has confused them!

I find that the temperature in my kitchen is too variable ie cool normally but then pretty hot when cooking so only store the ones I want for the next couple of meals there.

Also, I've always thought that it's important to provide air movement round stored potatoes so always store in hessian or paper sacks so that they can breathe. Don't you get sweating if you keep them air tight?

I've got PFA's still in store plus the later lifting of King Eds, Valor and Desiree... the maris Pipers are just about done. Had a problem with the early lifting starting to sprout in their cardboard boxes in the garage but that was the warm November for you, don't think many are going to be shooting now for a few weeks.... I'll be makign PFA potato salad for boxing day but xmas we're at my brother's...

Found a bunch I must have put in my cloth messenger bag ages ago! Was fortunatly to not have made potato sludge, but they've all sprouted.
