  • What sort of leaf miner?

    Sorry, no pics....

A handful of my onions have minor whiteish tunnels in the tips of leaves. There are no white spots down the leaves or other signs that look like the alium leaf miner, so I'm wondering if there are other (hopefully less serious!) leaf miners that might be seen....

I'm looking for reassurance I'm not going to lose the whole crop... ;-)

I don't know of any leaf miner apart from allium leaf miner that attacks onions, though I hope for your sake that I'm wrong.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
    Pumpkin pi.

I've seen a moth caterpillar (pretty sure it's not a leek moth though) burrow into onion leaves. they go down to the base of the leaf but don't appear to get any further so don't spoil the crop. You can identify if it's the dratted ALM, close inspection shows the grubs are maggots as opposed to caterpillars and they turn into definite brown pupae. To find one just follow it's chomped path through the onion layers.

I doesn't seem to be going through layers, just playing around in the tips of leaves....

Could you grab the bugs out with tweezers or finger nails to save the leaves? Then that leaf can carry on growing/being a food source for the next bug? There's so many bugs around this year!

Or maybe even just snip off the damaged part?

I've just been snapping off the damaged part- in most cases just an inch or so.
