  • What isn't it too late to plant?

Having spent a year and a half working every daylight hour of a week, and having neglected the garden in a major style, I've got myself a new job that means I am now working a lot of evenings - freeing up daytime hours to get back in the garden.

I've spent a little time weeding the raised beds and want to put some bits in them but not sure what isn't too late. Ideally I'd like to grow some tomatoes, cucumbers etc - are these too late? Also have an empty small greenhouse that I could use. Is it too late for potatoes also?

We don't eat a vastly varied veggie diet, I've always failed to save brassicas etc from whitefly and cabbage white larvae etc so don't really want to waste the time and space on them. Tomatoes, onions, potatoes, cucumbers etc is where I'm aiming, could of course go and buy ready grown plants to grow on but would prefer to sow from seed.

Hoping someone can advise whether I've missed the chance this year Thanks in advance!

I would suggest most things as we are about 4 - 5 weeks behind this year.

This weekend I sowed, carrots, salads, rocket, chinese brocoli, pak choi, spring onions, khol rabi, turnips, perpetual spinach, Mizuna, runner beans, parsnips, and beets.

In the last week I have sown indoors, french beans, cucumber, courgette, Leeks, and chard.

Last year I started sowing end March so feel a bit behind too.

You are getting rather late for tomatoes but you could give it a go - they'll probably fruit later than most but you should still get a crop, particularly if you're growing under cover. Cucumbers, no problems at all, they grow quickly and I've only just sown mine a few days ago. Potatoes, go with an early variety that won't need so long in the ground. Beans and peas (if you want to grow them) will be fine too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I totally agree as spring isn't quite here yet. We had snow until few weeks ago and then rain and more rain.

My moto this year is chuck it in and hope for the best Half of the seeds I've sown in the last fews days would normally have been in ages ago. If you have a nosy around the shops you'll probably find some nice reduced price pre chitted pots and maybe even some onion sets that have started sprouting already in the bags.

I've thrown the sowing calendar out the window this year. I'm just sowing and hoping - it can't be more disastrous than last year
My theory this year, is - late start = late finish

No, no no, this year will be a glorious summer of warmth and sun during the days and rain in the nights to keep everything growing beautifully. And magic fairies and pixies that come and do the weeding and catch all the slugs and snails
