    Default What I did today - 2019

This is intended to act as an aide memoir to everyone on the Grapevine - to remind us of tasks that should be carried out at that time of year. It is not intended to be a Blog or a journal but simply an aid to help.

I'm going to chat to myself.

Jan 1st I. cleared the A bed, pulled down the Achocha vines, cut back the Achillea and spotted the Allium Sphaerocephalum emerging. Also hoed and raked the beds ( was the old chicken run) and eyed up the soil as potential planting compost.
Put modules of compost in the propagator to warm up.

Jan 2nd. Hoed the B bed, cut back the straggly Blackcurrants and Jostaberries, pulled out the ivy that was spreading under the bushes and pulled up some wayward raspberries.
Will be sowing early tomatoes in the prop in a minute! Done - 27 seeds sown.

    2019 gardening season has started.

Cut back the straggly foliage from the dahlias in the back garden.
Cut all the withered leaves from the outdoor strawberries.
Pulled some weed seedlings from among the containers of daffs and tulips.
Lightly watered my sweet pea plants.
Did a bit of raking and going
It was a lovely mild dsy though it was a dull one.
Spent the evening googling and deciding what varieties of tomatoes I will sow for the upcoming season now that my seed swap parcel has arrived.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Did some weeding and chopping back on the C bed. My hands were so cold that I pulled up 2 carrots by mistake and snapped a calendula. Oops.
Scattered some Chard seeds on the bare patches.

Spent another couple of hours in the garden this afternoon.
There is always something to do even in the winter.
Weeding, hoeing, or just generally tidying.
Cant wait for the evenings to get brighter.

Weeding and cutting back on Bed 4D today. Dug up more roaming raspberries. Pruned the Buddleia (actually, lopped off all the seed heads before they seed - but "Pruned" sounds as if I had a plan).
Cut back some dead growth from the tangle of honeysuckle and jasmine that grows on the fence.
Sowed some radish in GH No.2 (having forgotten that I'd already sown some on Monday. ). With luck, I'll manage to eat some before they go woody!

Made it to the plot today, woohoo! Did some composting, a bit of weeding, cut back a tree that was sprawling over my dilapidated shed.
Then did some work on the blueberry rock garden, top dressed the bushes with compost, pruned them a bit, weeded out some weeds, and added a couple more rocks.

cleared old bits of rotting wood from the last derelict corner of my plot, then weeded it (4 large barrowfuls of wood/weeds), then mulched, pulled up a few celeriac, leeks and a cabbage, then home for a long hot bath!
