  • What to grow in a shady area - help please!

Having had no crops at all this year due to moving house I'm starting to plan earky for next year. I've given up all hope of getting an allotment for the next couple of years so anything I grow will have to be in the garden.

We've an ideal spot to put a greenhouse, but the only area available to grow veg is a patio at the back of the house that is in the shade most of the day but gets the sun late afternoon / evening. I'm hoping to put deep raised beds on top of the flagstones and grow in there. I'm still a novice at this growing malarkey and would really appreciate any advice as to what veg, if any, will grow in these conditions.

    Thanks.

i have a shady spot about a foot wide that runs down the edge of my fence at the south of my garden. It only gets a glimpse of light in the mornings and evenings.
I planted my salads, herbs and strawberries in it this year.
The taller herbs like rosemary and mint bent out over the path to try and gain a little more light. The strawberries were only in this year so didn't get much fruit, but they seem pretty happy there. The salads did ok, but were prone to bolting quite quickly, especially the salad bowl, rocket and corriander.

Would be interested in any suggestions for next year too.

I have a raised bed that only get sun late afternoon and salad does really well there as it like shade. To my suprise I have also had a great crop of parsnip, chard and carrots from that bed, maybe they needed less sun than I thought

Im sure someone more experienced will be along in a while to help

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.

The type of veg I normally grow includes broad beans, runner and french beans (although I usually grow these in large pots in the front garden), courgettes, beetroot, carrots, salad crops, herbs, strawberries. I would like to try shallots, garlic as well and would be open to any other suggestions.

Garlic is fabulously easy, personally I had no luck with shallots this year. I dont think they liked being grown in window boxes.

Don't give up on getting an allotment. I heard on the radio that one council is thinking of turning it's six municipal golf courses into allotments (what a good idea). If all councils follow suit you may get a lottie sooner rather than later.

Wouldnt work round here, all golf courses are private and cost an arm and a leg to get into

I had some cabbages in partial shade-they were doing fine except being munched by slugs-think about something slugs don't fancy too much or how to keep them at bay.

Woah, you can't go digging up our local golf course!

Don't get me wrong, I can't stand golf, but all the good sloe bushes are on it
