Well I used the soil from the garden, which is heavy clay, took the stones out, added manure (bought from the garden centre) and (cleaned) sand. I did this last year and had great results, and the soil still looks great.. added more manure in the autumn. The councils often do bags of compost too - very cheap

Mine is a mix of garden soil (clay), manure (depending on what I am growing) and mpc.

Whatever is available and is afordable. There is no need to try and fill beds to the top of the boards in one season they can be built up over several aeasons.

Good quality top soil from a farm. Think I paid £24 and had enough for two raised beds and my borders.

My own top soil, well rotted horse manure and MPC. I also add lime to my brassica beds as my soil is acidic.
A good beginning is half the work.

I think its Multi Purpose Compost, but I may be wrong.
In my beds I use soil from the digging over, pelleted chicken pooh and home produced compost.

when we built our raised beds we used the soil that was in place there - seems like previous people got topsoil in -fairly crumbly but stony. Further down is clay. I just add multi-purpose compost (MPC) each year as I sow seeds and earth up plants. This year I put home made compost on one of the beds. Next year we'll have chicken poo enriched compost!
