  • What do u do with ur used compost

    Hiya,

I know u are not meant to use compost again to grow in, what does everyone do with the old compost u have used? Can I put it in my compost heap or into beds I am getting ready for next year.

    Sorry silly question.

    Thanks

I sieve the roots out and use it for peas and winter lettuces.

I presume you are talking commercial compost.

Providing there has been no problem with disease I reuse all my compost, no idea how old some of it is.

It is riddled to remove roots etc and stored over winter in 10 80ltr dustbins. When I need it is sweetened with a base fertilizer, I used to use Growmore but have changed this year to Organic Extra a concentrated dry farmyard manure and had very good results so shall stick with that in future.

Great, I will start reusing it. As I have grown things in pots so far I don't want to waste it.

Either empty it on to the bed and dig it in, it helps me get a better soil, or I will reuse it with addition of manure on things like potato's next year.

One odd thing I have noticed is that it often appears darker and richer for spending the winter in the container.

What do on occasion is to remove the dead plants and store the entire pots somewhere (if i have room). By next year the roots have rotted away so the old compost can be mixed with grow more and fresh compost if needed for another round. I also either stick it in my compost bin or remove the roots and spread it somewhere in the garden.

I think I will be breaking mine up and spreading it on the ground I would have cleared by then. I will of course lay a cardboard blanket over it as well.

As others have said, I re-use it all the time. Mix some feed with it and off you go.
