    What can I sow now?

    Hi Peeps

    Now I know that there is already a thread about early tomatoes... but I got TWO super fabby heated propogators for Xmas. So tomoatoes will be going in but what else can I get on with and sow NOW!

    (Never was one for patience!)

      Onions! (See relevant thread.) Also, I'm going to sow some lettuce in seed medium on the windowsill soon, for early salads.
      Tour of my back garden mini-orchard.

        Pea shoots are really delicious and very easy and quick (satisfies that growing itch you get this time of year!). Just sow some into a pot and keep it on the windowsill. Harvest the top 10cm ish of the shoots, leaving a growing point to produce more. Eat with salads. Yum!

          Im going to have a go at chillies i think, ive been advised to wait until April but so many people have posted saying they have sown already; cant be no harm in trying )

          going to get the tomatoes started at weekend too!

            Amy - if you wait until April to sow chilis, they really won't mature in time.

              I start chillis off in beginning of feb but then wait a while for toms as I don't have the space to keep them in the house!

                Hi

                I have carrot (Parano F1) on kitchen paper in the airing cupboard. Once they start to sprout they will go into containers in the greenhouse (unheated). It worked well last year, but its a lot colder this year so fingers crossed.

                Toms and broadbeans in loo rolls on kitchen window sill.

                    zazen999...............would that be the same for peppers?
                    would it be advisable to start them earlier?
                    i did manage rto get some last year but they seemed very small and thin...

                      Yes, get some started now [just a few] and the rest in Feb at the latest.

                      Chilis and peppers really need a good long season for the best results.

                      Top tip for both. Take the first flower off. And put them into the biggest pots you can.

                      Taking the first flower off makes it panic into putting out more flowers than it would otherwise. Putting it into a big pot gives it room to grow and lengthens the season [doesn't die off so fast at the end of the year]

                      We tested this at work; we all grew the same chilis on the same windowsill and I took the first flower off and the others didn't - and I got 3 times as many resulting chilis than anyone else. Plus it was the biggest overall plant.
