    What Can I plant.......

    Hi
    Fairly new to growing veg n stuff...
    I got a raised bed that is approx 3ft x 4ft and about 3 ft deep, is this big enough to grow veg and what would be the best things to grow. I plan to grow lettuces in pots and toms in grow bags, just not sure whats the best things to grow in the rasied bed. I would like to grow a variety of things and keep the bed well stocked

        Sounds ideal for a host of salady sort of things - radishes, beetroot, carrots, lettuces. These can all be grown quickly, and sown successionaly through the year and won't take up too much space.

        You could fit a courgette plant, maybe two. Or - here's a good idea, a load of bright lights Swiss chard, they look and taste lurvely and will keep producing for 3/4 of the year!

        Or you could get 20 or so leeks or onions in there or a load of cabbages. Or maybe a few dwarf french beans - those are nice.

        Or howsabout a nice dramatic squash plant?

        The possibilities are endless!!! Just don't try and cram in everything!

          With that depth, root crops will excell. As the others have advised, grow what you eat but also try something new that would be expensive to buy, like jerusalem artichoke, or something nusual and not stocked in the shops. I grew yellow and white beetroot, swiss chard, Mooli and more, all things I wouldn't or couldn't buy in shops.
          Owning a garden doesn't make you a gardener any more than owning a garage makes you a car.

              I think all veg will grow in a raised bed.
              We use raised beds too for our veg and it has done well every year.

                Carrots are great in a raised bed - the soil is nice and light for them, and you get a lot of crop in a small space. Garlic's good for the same reason - I grew mine around the tomatoes last year (they make good companions), so they came out in July, before the tomato plants got too enormous, and I got a good crop.

                Another good book for raised-bed gardening is "Grow Your Own Veg" by Carol Klein - it includes full details of a planting project done at Ryton Gardens to make maximum use of a small space.
