  • What can I grow in a wheelbarrow?

So I've just bought a new house, and become the proud owner of one rusty old wheelbarrow. I don't want to throw it out though; I thought it might make a nice feature, and I'm short of space to grow things/money to buy those big containers! I thought I once read a feature about growing things in wheelbarrows if I drilled a couple of holes in the bottoms, so any ideas what would be good to grow in there?

My first answer was going to be - "wheels"

If you can't find any wheel seeds maybe salads or, for the cottage garden look, herbs and flowers. Final suggestion - marigolds. Then you can wheel them around your plot to wherever they are most needed.
PS that would be "wheely" cool.

In my first garden I had an old ornamental wooden wheelbarrow that I renovated and painted and filled with cottage garden flowers.

It was at the front door until some swine walked away with it.....plants and all!

I like the squash idea, but the flowers would be pretty....tough choice!

I've got garlic growing in my old wheelbarrow that died on me last year, and it's doing very well, very ornamental behind my chimney inners and polystyrene boxes both growing strawberries

                Lovely post

ps I really like the marigold idea, sort of a moveable hit squad.

I had strawbs in an old wheelbarrow last year but moved them to a new bad last week. The plan is to try BNS this year and let them trail down the railway sleeper steps.

we found a rat's nest in our wheelbarrow the other day. I wouldn't recommend one of those. *shudder* Nasturtiums would look nice, they would train over the edge and soften it a bit. The herb idea is a lovely one too.

I am going to try courgettes in mine, for the first time growing in a wheel barrel. Have to swap notes and see how we get on.

I also have a lovely wooden wheelbarrow I am going to try strawberry in mine, and I dont think anyone would walk of with it as I live on a island and someone would see it gossip goes around faster here than a village
