  • We've eaten our first cucumbers :)

I'm quite pleased - thought that I'd maybe sowed too early (my dad said I had.....) and then had a while of doing the shuffle from the kitchen to the greenhouse morning and night as night time temps were still too low......

But, my mini cucumbers are ripening up nicely - eaten two so far and there are another two nearly ready. I've only got four plants, so they won't keep us going for long, but my son loves being able to go and pick them to eat.

Question....... Can I save the seed to use for next year? They are an F1 variety, but can't remember which at the moment.

    Thank you!

I'm very impressed, my cucumbers are only at seed leaf stage. You could save the seed but if they are an F1 variety there is no guarantee what the offspring will be like. Could be an interesting experiment though.

Yes "hats off" to you. As Wendy said they won't breed true at all.

Well done . With four plants you should have huge numbers of fruits so plenty for your son. I only ever grow one plant and end up giving them away to people by high summer (assuming we get one!) as I can't eat / pickle them all. You will need to keep feeding though otherwise they'll stop doing anything.

Mine have only just come through as I only sowed a couple of weeks ago as I didn't want the plants to get out of hand but they're now looking healthy but a long way behind yours.

Re the seeds, as said above, if they're F1 they almost certainly won't come true but will germinate. I don't save F1s at all because I prefer to know what I'm getting but if you have the space and don't mid the risk of growing something you're not keen on (it might be great too but you don't know) then go for it. Seem to remember there are some good saving tips for them on the Real Seeds web site if you need them.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Blimey! Planted mine out in the polytunnel today, and I'm worried whether it's too cold for them,. Still plenty of time to plant more though if the succumb. Dear summer, please hurry up and get here!!!!

                    he he

I was a bit impatient this year and sowed on 19th February with everything staying on the kitchen windowsill. the Kitchen is at a constant 18 - 23 degrees day and night due to the AGA. I was a bit worried when things needed potting on but the night time temps weren't high enough for me to put everything out in the unheated greenhouse, so lots of shuffling involved. Night time temps are still getting down to 8 / 9 degrees sometimes.

I have started to feed them, so hopefully they'll keep producing, I was wondering if it would be worth sowing a few more seeds so I have some later in the season too.....

Thanks for the advice re the seeds - don't think I'll bother saving them as if I'm putting the effort in I would like to know they'll be worth eating at the end!

I 'lost' one cucumber yesterday when my son took one to a neighbour as a thankyou for letting him help with her horses

East Yorkshire certainly hasn't been very warm this year, so surprised they've come on as well as they have. Tomato plants sowed at the same time are about a foot or so tall and doing pretty well, but haven't got any trusses on yet - don't think I've gained much by sowing them so early. Same with the peppers - they are looking very healthy, but have only started to put on growth significantly in the last week or two.

They are all in pots this year as well - in the past I had a greenhouse where I planted straight into the ground, but here its all concreted so everything has to be in pots.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the plants!
