Having eaten some water chestnuts (tinned from the Chinese supermarket) last night, I want to know if its possible to grow them. I've Goggled ad nauseum and they seem to need a shallow, wet patch of ground. A paddling pool was suggested. Has anyone tried growing them in the UK?

No but if you do I'm round to your house for the stir fry. I love them, ask for more in my take away and am lucky if I find three slices

If you stick the tin in the ground now, in springtime you'll get a tinned water chestnut tree growing with little tiny tins on it!

You'd be very welcome! Meanwhile, my tin was about 60p and it was actually quite good, Still crunchy. One can pig out on water chestnuts with a tin!! I bet they're tinned in the takeaways. Must buy some more - puts note on shopping list!Comment

Its the watercress and water chestnuts that tempt me as I'm not too keen on the briny!
I'm working on a cunning plan for a series of mini-ponds (tubs), each one lower than the next on a flight of steps and fed from the pond/tub above. The uppermost pond fed from the rainwater butt, the lowest pond overflowing onto a patch of ground.
Each pond would grow a different crop.

Haven't grown water chestnuts, but if you're after that crunchy texture, try growing yacon.
