  • Vegetable cage

I need to make a vegetable cage and would appreciate any advice.Last year I made a contraption from bamboo and netting. It was a bit flimsy but at least I got a fantastic pea crop.Unfortunately when I took it down found several bodies of little birds that had been caught in the netting, that was upsetting.I'd like to make a fairly big cage or 2 smaller ones, for peas and brassicas,my DIY skills are not brilliant but I'll have a go .Can't afford to buy proper cages that cost hundereds.Looking forward to hearing from you!

How about something like this? You could make it to fit your space.

Use debris netting or some very close weave net so that bird can't get their feet caught in it.

No plan as such, I just hammered metal pipes into the ground 4ft apart then pushed 1" blue water pipe onto them. Finished off with 3mt wide debris netting...........Oh, almost forgot, extra timber bracing was put it place to give it a bit more rigidity.

DH done all the scrounging of wood, all it cost was the screws, and a bit of patients,no plans, as they were put together with what we had at the time, all we did was, erect the side walls, then some beams in a fashion on the roof, not only to hold the top net up,but give strength to the outside frame,i have 3,all different,to use on my rotation, the idea is,i do not have to erect a fresh frame every year,BM's one,is certainly quick and easy,,also lumpy's one covered with debri netting,if possible ask at scaffold places, and building sites,it all boiles down to what you can cope with doing, and sourse supples,
