Default Which veg to grow in shady area?

I'm trying to talk the husband around to building a raised bed in the front garden (it's postage stamp sized and currently a mass of over grown grass and bloody buttercups). However, it is north facing (thankfully the south facing back garden will grow just about anything).

Can anyone recommend anything that will grow well in a shady area, that is not deep rooting (only doing about 10" deep and don't really want to have to dig down underneath) and that is reasonably decorative too (I can just see the look on the face of the old bat next door if we go ahead, lol). I do have a fantastic herb patch in the back garden and did think about transplanting those into the fron and freeing up the space in the back?

Can anyone advise please?
