  • Veg cage recommendation?

I'd really like one of those veg cages to protect from the butterflies etc.Going to get organised for next years cabbages. I'm determined to get this right! I've seen those ball connector and aluminium rod types. Anyone got one and recommend a make. Some of them look really expensive,

    What's your budget?
You can just bodge something together with debris netting and canes

as per the other thread, I got debris netting (black), 3m wide off ebay. 50m length - there's loads of it! Shame you aren't closer to me, otherwise you could of had some of mine.

I then bought 3m lengths of conduit (white - wish it was black now!) and bent them over in hoops, that are on the insides of the bed edges - netting drapped over the top.

If I were to make a 'proper' cage, I'd probably use something like Dexion, or E-Z Rect like Flummery has made her Chicken run and buy some netting that'd allow pollinating insects through.

Thanks. I was going to be lazy after seeing sister-in-laws neat tidy one from (I think) Harrodshorticulture, but maybe I'll put some thought into it and create my own. The tennis ball idea is brilliant!

I've just scrounged a load of yellow polypipe to make some hoops with for next year.
Problem is that with my pocket planting I never fill a whole bed with one thing?
Ideally I could do with individual covers for each plant.

I've seen these to buy, made from willow but they are very expensive. Just going to have to plant some willow for coppicing methinks!

I've told OH, who's in the building game, to look out for scaffolding netting, steel tubes or anything suitable for side struts. Told him what I'm going to do and crossing my fingers that stuff may appear!!

We used BK's tennis ball and canes idea. So far so good , We haven't cut our long canes down cos it means we can vary the height of the cage...and reuse the canes for bean poles ....
