Unusual coloured vegetables

I got the golden collection from the organic catalog which has lots of yellow things: yellow french beans, yellow beetroot, yellow courgettes, yellow tomatoes etc

I grew purple carrots last year - very attractive on the plate, and didn't seem quite so bothered by carrot root fly. I also grew yellow mangetout (much easier to see and pick before they got too big), and both purple and yellow French beans. It's nice to grow something a bit different from the stuff in the shops.

I think it makes eating things more interesting for children, a multicoloured plate is fun! (says mum hopefully...)
This year we have yellow courgettes, tigrella toms, purple beans, multicoloured radishes and yellowish carrots.

Got yellow courgettes this year, and will be trying lots of different colour carrots next year (yellow, red, purple as well as orange, gonna try some round ones too) - and blue hopi sweetcorn

I'm hoping that unusual colours and shapes will encourage my little one's interest and even if not, I'm going to enjoy a multi-coloured plot! Can't quite face funny-coloured caulis though, maybe another year...

(And I do like the idea of yellow mangetout - not been very impressed with bog standard oregon sugar pod this year and certainly it's hard to spot the green pods sometimes!)

I have yellow courgettes, really nice and producing very nicely, and blue sweetcorn, yet to 'flower' but nice, tall healthy plants

My two-year-old daughter wanted to help me grow some veg, so she's growing her own purple carrots in a tub. She pulled one out today. We gave it a quick wipe and she gobbled it down - Lovely! I may try some other crazy coloured veg next year.

Yellow courgettes, golden beetroot (first year) yellow and orange tomatoes, and endive blanched white.

My teenage son also loved the purple carrots - steamed they retain the purple outer ring and red centre. Sweet yellow cherry toms are always a hit!

Despite the face pulling from OH I'm trying some hideously bright green caulis (romanesco) and red strawberry popcorn

Last year: Golden beetroots, yellow & purple french beans, purple carrots, yellow courgettes, purple tomatoes, red brussels sprouts.
This year: All the above plus; Purple podded peas, red beans, red kale, stripey beetroot, red, white & yellow carrots.

Last year - yellow courgettes (disaster) yellow french beans, red, green, black and yellow tomatoes, Chard Rainbow Lights, red lettuce
This year - red cabbage, yellow courgettes, red lettuce, red kale

I am growing yellow carrots and rainbow radishes! Looking forward to the results. I haven't heard of purple carrots before! Where do you get the seeds from?

Thompson & Morgan: Carrot Purple Haze (F1) - I'm spoilt, I live not half a mile from the highest concentration of big nurseries and specialist horticultural outlets you've every seen - some offer new seed types only available over the internet.

Never the less, I believe multi coloured carrots are the 'in thing' and should be available in any decent nursery.

Sliced Julienne (sp) and caramalised in your sugar of choice (maple syrup for me) they look really spectacular!

Romanesco is devine, I'm having a bash with it - fingers crossed, it is incomparable with cauli for flavour and looks amazing.

Romanesco is the tops; for us adults anyway. Same as the yellow and purple carrots; the yellow beetroot, yellow, black, and cream coloured toms, the rainbow swiss chard, hopefully the rainbow quinoa shold look good as well.

I can't get my OH's little girl to eat anything multi coloured - she's one of these kids where if it's not the same then it's wrong. Whereas I like things that are different from the norm, she will only do the norm. Unfortunately, it seems during her formative years, the norm was Heinz...anything else just won't do.

I'll carry on with the multi-coloured veg for my own fun though!!!
