  • trusses and elbows

i've heard a lot about trusses on tomato plants but what are they and what do they look like? has anyone got a pic of one? also when do i start pinching out the elbows?

Truss for want of a better word are the branches that come off the main stem, the elbows are the bits that grow from the junction of the truss and the main stem, you pick them off once they are big enough to grab

They are in a way. They are like bunches of grapes coming out of the main stem.

the trusses are what the fruit hangs off. They [almost always] have no extra leaves, just stems with flowers on.

The armpits are the bits between the leaves and the main stem; you pinch these out as they grow on Vine toms to encourage only the toms on the trusses off the main stem to carry on and ripen.

            What's an elbow???

An elbow is the little green joint above the tomato which you break to harvest the tomato to leave the green "leafy" calyx on the red tomato.

The proof of the growing is in the eating.

So you haven't got any trusses yet?

Have you got any flowers at all?

Yes, they should - I think after 4 or 5 'nodes' you should see a truss forming.

You should get a flower truss after there are 6 leaves growing.

The number of leaves is more of an indication than the height!!!
