  • Topping Jerusalem artichokes

My Jerusalem artichokes are in a some what exposed position, I lost one to the wind a few days ago.

I've since supported the remaining ones and put some earth around the base of the stems and they're looking alot more stable now but perhaps taking their tops off would lead to them becoming a bit bushier and studier rather than just growing up?

Do you think having shorter more bushy plants would improve tuber production?

They're yet to start flowering, am i supposed to remove flower heads when I see them? would removing them help the plants conserve energy for more important growth?

Growing these for the first time this year. Having looked on t'internet it seems you chop them to about 5 feet. This helps stop windrock (meant to earth them up as well apparently), & also puts plants energies into tubers not flowers. Best get outside with my secateurs soon

      Thanks.
I'll keep an eye on them, they're approaching 5ft now, they grow so fast. As soon as they're there, I'll take their heads off

Any idea if the flowers should be removed? I'd prefer them to flower to add a little colour to the garden but only if it doesn't limit tuber production.
