  • Top of the Crops

    Hello all,

This month, we want to know which veg is top of the crops and why!
Tell us why your patch can't be without beetroot, or exactly why you love those leeks. Whether it's for flavour or simply the joy of growing - if you have a favourite, we want to hear about it!

I cant live without tomatoes! We eat them all year round, but managed to grow enough to last all through July - end Sept this year.
Hoping to do better next year and want to grow more cooking ones, (am using Amish paste for this)
I also enjoyed growing them - not too tricky for the novice, and I have a big south facing 'lean-to' (that is more of an old glass conservatory) which they thrived in.

You've missed out French beans, which have to be the most versatile (eat whole, mature or dried) and productive of crops.

Eating nearly every thing in season means you come to enjoy the arrival of anything new on your plate and start to tire of them a bit by the last few....but my top crops are the ones you just can't find quite as good anywhere else...even it appears on your list. Sweetcorn is probably the favourite annual veg in my household... But for me it is the first asparagus that is number one and most anticipated.....not long to go now!

Not on the list, but for us personally it has to be sweetcorn - we're hooked! First time we have grown it, and we had the last of it last night from the freezer, my wife was saying we definately need to grow it again!

It's definately a firm favourite with the little one too - she goes mad if she spies a cob of corn

For me it has to be leeks, simply because they're available fresh when there's almost nothing else surviving on the plot. Leeks remind me of that hardy breed the northern hill farmers. Out in all weathers and just getting on with the job!

Of course, I love everything that I grow and always look forward to the first pick of each crop every year.

It has to be peas. They grow vertically, therefore don't take up much room. And you just cannot match the flavour of just picked peas, so sweet and delicious.

Has to be carrots for me. Freshly pulled and eaten within minutes.......Yummm!
Apart from that, its the only veg I am totally self sufficient in and sits under enviromesh from start to finish ..........52 weeks of the year!

It may not be everyone's favorite, but I love growing courgettes. Their incredible productivity always makes me feel like a really accomplished gardener! How can you not love something that just keeps giving and giving all summer?

Peas, it has to be peas - I grow loads and loads - nothing beats the taste of them fresh off the plant. (Not many get home to be cooked, but I did manage to freeze some as well this year).

Also sweetcorn, very tasty straight from the plant. Yum. They all got eaten straight away this year.

Tomatoes for me. Difficult to beat the taste of that first ripe tomato of the summer, still warm straight off the vine..............

                            regards

Sorry to add another to the list but for me it's got to be freshly picked cauliflower.
