If they are priced correctly (cheap) then what have you to lose. Get em in asap while the soil is still warm. I always grow kale as a catch crop between my runner bean canes. I love it when the frost crisps it.

IMO kale is usable whatever its size although some types are better than others to eat small and raw.
As arpoet says ^^^^ what have you got to lose. Go for it

It's so mild, if they are healthy, I'm sure you'll get something. You could always cloche them when the cold comes to help them keep growing on. Feed them well but not so they are soft when the frost starts. Like VC says, eat at any size.

I'm growing on some kale plug plants I took delivery of about a fortnight ago to give them a chance with the snugs. They're about 6" high now, so yes PMW, buy those plants and grow them on

i've got a few kale plants in cell trays, still small, will be planting them sometime next week
i'll grow them over winter for bigger leaves to use instead of spinach in curries etc

I'd say go ahead as I think you will still get some worthwhile leaves over the winter and spring. I'm planning on sowing some today in modules, I'll either plant them in a poly-tunnel or in an outside bed covered most likely with debris netting.

Great, thanks I am now convinced. Ordered some cavolo nero and russian kale plants and hope to get them in the ground soon.
