  • Is it too late for garlic?

A little birdie told me you need to make sure you have a full month of minus 10 degree tempratures to ensure a good garlic crop. Am I too late now?

I wouldn't plant them now by choice, but if you have them in your hand then yes I would give it a go, rather than waste them - you will have (hopefully) a wonderful med summer to sort 'em

You might get away with it - try putting the cloves in the fridge for a couple of days - they need a cold snap to trigger formation of cloves. I only planted mine out tonight !! (see my entry in What I did Today thread)

You can always use garlic "green" without waiting for it to make bulbs. Bit like spring onions but more exciting.

Does that not only count for autumn planted varieties? I thought (rightly or wrongly) that the spring sown stuff could go in, not have frost and still do ok.

Just been having a look on Google for you and came across this site it might help to clear things up for you. I always plant mine on Bonfire Night.

You do get spring planted Garlic too. I'm sure there are varieties that don't need the minus temps to produce bulbs. My bulbs from T&M arrived only a couple of weeks ago and are still in their bag so I'm not particularly concerned about planting now.

Well, I planted mine out on 13th March last year, which is only four days past, and it did really well! We didn't have any frost at all after I'd planted it, as far as I can remember, and I certainly didn't put it in the fridge or anything, as until the end of last year I'd never heard about the cold thing. (I heard it on the Grapevine ).

I'd say go for it, provided you get it in in the next week-ish, it's worth a try?

Presumably one of those varieties was what I had last year. Think I bought it in good 'ole Wilko's.

Wilko`s sell garlic before Christmas & then sell it off to make way for Christmas items.
When all that is over they start selling it again so I would imagine this variety is suitable for spring sowing,.

What about garlic that has sprouted in the veg basket? I have several cloves with nice green shoots - raring to go.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Stick em in - what have you got to lose.

I have a bunch of Autumn garlic in pots in the garden. Apparently they grow bigger but don't keep as well. I only did Spring planted garlic last year and just finishing them off now. Some of the cloves had shrivelled up a bit but mostly ok. The shallots from last year are still looking good.

I'd plant them, even if its just to see what will happen, you'll have to let us know for future reference.

they will likely be more suited to growing in a different place - med?, but don't see the harm in putting in a pot and giving it a go

D'you know I suspect these are the remnants of my own 2009 harvest, Elsie! Shows how much I use garlic - I always give most of it away!
