    Toms and spuds sharing a bed

    1 of the changes for next years gardening is,growing in sort of raised beds,instead of the open ground,ti's time to make life a bit easier,my 1 thought for now is toms and main crop spuds,as they are the same group,am thinking of planting some canning type toms amongst the spuds,thinking this will give more to a smaller space,soooo,has anyone done this,and what spacing would be recommended,

    Would you leave the spuds in the ground till all of your toms had been picked?

      Yes,that is why i said main crop,by the time the spuds are ready to harvest,the toms will be going over,if blight does not get them first,

        I don't think it's good companion planting due to blight problems.

              They are of the same family,that's what gave me the idea,get more from the same space so to speak,have heard it said that things can be planted closer together in raised beds,

                You wouldn't be able to earth up your spuds and picking the toms might be difficult if they're amongst the spuds.

                  I know VC,last year i put straw on top of spuds,this year some have mowings on,and both produced spuds and no green ones,i strip the lower tom leaves of anyway,another thing the tom plants can be put into bottomless pots,that will raise them higher up,plus any grass clippings will help keep weeds at bay,

                    Are you thinking of using the same planting hole LD or planting them side by side.

                      BM,i planed to plant in some of the spaces,or down the centre of the bed,so roots get their own space next to each other,therefore, more spud plants than toms,i just wondered if someone else had done this,with what results,must put myself in a bed now,look in later on,

                        When I plant tomatoes in my garden they usually produce roots which are several feet long. Not sure this would mix very well with the potatoes.
