  • Tomatos in hanging baskets??

I've grown some tomatos in hanging baskets this year, which in my opinion have been rather sucessfull. The variety used was "garden pearl". They fruited quite early which was a bonus as along with the other tom's i've grown has extended the picking season, however, I wouldn't say they were the most flavoursome I've ever tried, if anything a little too acidic. I would like to grow tom's in baskets again simply because of the speed at which they grew but would like a better flavour, I've heard "Tumbling Tom" is a good one to grow?? Any advice would be a help.

I have grown Maskotka (or something like that) in baskets for the past 3ish years and I think they are far tastier than the Tumbling Toms which I find very bland. Didn't think much to Garden Pearl either when I tried them. My baskets started fruiting a good 3 or 4 weeks before the other toms and 3 out of 4 of the plants are still going. They have looked dead a few times due to lack of water but were revived with a good drink and didn't split at all.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I second Maskotka, a tasty cherry which knocks spots of Garden Pearl. I've also found Ditmarsher a good tasty pink cherry and really early too.

I've grown 100s & 1000s in hanging baskets this year and last year and although they didn't quite live up to their name I did get a good and tasty crop of cherry toms off them.

I grew 100s and 1000s for the first time this year and the taste beats any of the other cherry tom types I've tried (and that's quite a lot!) by miles. Smaller than most others but they seem to be going on for ever, even though the leaves have taken a battering with all the rain and wind.

I did some type of yellow plum heirlooms in an upside down 2 liter coke bottle, growing downwards.

They have done very well. I shall take a photo tonight.
