Tomatoes in Yoghurt Pots

I read in gardener's world magazine that in a 7.5cm pot you should do 5 seeds in a ring. Then prick out when big enough and separate into individual pots.

A 500ml pot would do about 8 seeds safely by my completely unscientific guesswork.

You thought about paper pots out of old newspaper? lots of info on them on this forum!

Yeah, I did the paper pots last year but they didn't work so great for me. All of these seedlings will be grown inside the house to start with and there is rug everywhere but the kitchen. Being who I am, this means I need something a bit stronger and more stable than a paper pot.

Thanks for doing the guesswork for me about the number of seeds.

depends on how long you want to kepp them in the pot before transplanting. The bigger the pot and few the seeds the longer you will be able to leave them before putting into individual pots. If you have the room you could even put just one seed in each pot and just transplant into final position in a couple of months time.

I have just aquired some used plastic coffee cups, an unlitited suply.
I have washed out about 30 for now.
Only started off a few toms so far.

Oh, Fluorescent green, you have just reminded me that I have a bunch of big takeaway coffee mugs from a previous unrealised project that would work as pots as well! Now all I need is to find another few window sills somewhere in the house to realise all these dreams...

Ian, I think I might do the one/two seeds per pot idea, especially now that I have a bigger stock of pots.
