    Tomato truss Q

    If you have a heavy truss and the weight of the tomatoes pulls the truss over, so that the stem is bent, is it better to support the stem of the truss with a cane, or is it not needed?

    In theory I suspect the bent stem will restrict the flow of water and nutrients to the fruit. But in practice I'm not sure it makes any difference.

    Any views?

    I've had this problem in the past with some of the bigger, heavier tomatoes. I grow mine in the greenhouse, and usually make a loop of string to go round the stem of the truss below the bend and suspend it from either the roof or one of the cross canes.

        I always give mine a bit of support too either by the method explained above or by sticking another cane in and using that as an intermediate support, depending on what's easiest.

        Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

        Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          by the end of the season I have sticks stuck all over the place as I forget to "armpit " them half the time.
