Tomato pots

thats expensive (as it seems most pots are now), you can just get free wooden crates from a fruit shop and fill with a grow bag.
9inch is probably ok for one plant but bigger is better if you dont mind blowing the cash and compost expense on it.

Tisn't just Morrisons that do the flower buckets - if you have a florist, or even a garage forecourt that sells flowers, you can get them there too.

The Wilko 'tomato pots' are probably only just big enough, they'd need very regular watering.

Yes it is expensive, but the buckets are pretty sturdy so suspect they would last for a few years - certainly cheaper than buying "proper" plantpots which were about �3 each!! Have asked around at a couple of places, local Tesco etc about their flower buckets but they all seem to be sending them back to the supplier rather than giving/selling them on! Doesn't help I'm in an area where there are no pound shops or similar places. Am also keeping an eye out on freecycle for useful bits but think I will invest in the bigger buckets for the time being. As I said not too many toms this year so only a few plants to see how it goes...maybe next year will have to rethink the plan!

Try your local Co-OP - as of late last year they had no recycling policy and I got nearly 100 for absolutely nothing - made a voluntary contrib to their charity box of the day.

Just make friends with the manager or the flower lady in bigger stores.

If it's of any use (and I know it's not much cheaper), I got black builders buckets (14 litre) for 95p each at Wickes. They're really sturdy and look quite good!

Quick question about pots for my tomatos. Wilkos have tomato pots advertised at 79p each and they are 9" diam, local homebase has builders buckets for �1 each which are about 12" diameter. I wondered if I'd be better going for the bigger pots/buckets. 9" pot doesnt look very big although I don't have much experience with tomato growing so some advice would be appreciated! Worth mentioning I don't have hundreds of tomato plants so won't be breaking the bank. I got 13 buckets for 90p in Morrisons. Why pay more?

Were they on general sale, or did you have to ask cupcake? The branch near me is not one of the larger stores, but I'll certainly try it for that price, what a bargain!

If your local store has cut flowers, they usually put the buckets at one end of the flower stand, taped together with yellow tape bearing the legend "8 for 99p". Apparently you sometimes get more than eight, but not in my local store. Stil a bargain though. Watch for the two different sizes, the bigger ones are about the size of a standard waste paper bin, the others about one inch smaller in diameter. Absolute bargain!!
