  • Tomato plants, just errr...dying

    Noticed a weird one the last week or so, a few of my tomato plants (outside) have kind of just dried up, gone crispy and died.

    It dont look like blight so am quite stumped and the fruit on it is fine (though still green).

    Anyone seen this before?

    Had any frost? Although the forecasts are saying its 10 - 14 degrees around here it
    feels a LOT colder.

    I have been trimming the leaves back on my plants, Hopefully help them form any remaining
    toms and ripen the ones already there.

      As LG has said the weather has turned. You are coming to the end of the growing season for toms outside. I'd take the fruit off and ripen them indoors.

        Okay. Will take a photo when I am on the plot tomorrow so people can have a good look.

        If it were blight, is there any particular reason why the plants couldn't be composted?

        I mean from what I understand the blight lives on the foliage and not in the soil so it should be safe to plant on the same bit next year and once the vegetation rots into compost that should be that shoyldnt it?

          Doesn't sound like blight..as others have said, the plants are reaching the end of the growing season...
          Some of mine doing it too; early croppers in particular....I just pick the crispy bits etc off and will compost them soon, after picking off any unripe fruit

              That looks like blight to me. As well as the blackening patches on the leaves and stem a couple of the tomatoes look to have gone brown at the top -- that's the blight getting them. It's quite advanced; you can control it a bit by removing the affected leaves, but in this case I think it's too late.

              I'd remove all the fruit and try and ripen it inside, but be prepared to make a bit of green tomato chutney.

              Some on here will suggest burning the plants, but to be honest blight is primarily weather driven and I'd compost them.

                Well I am collecting the fruit and taking out the plants.

                Will pile them by themselves and see what the majority say about composting

                    You may find that if you try to ripen the fruit it will just develop the brown patches. Best to cook them now, use for chutney before they turn.

                      What do they say- "A picture is worth a thousand words" or something like that... On seeing that, it does look a bit more than tired plants!!

                        Yip, mine is on its way out. Think I'll compost it today, looking forward to the space in the greenhouse.
