  • Tomato Plants acting strange?????

Im new to growing this year i have around 8 Tomatoe plants in grow bags, 3 to each grow bags i water them every early morning and night i sow'd the seeds on 11/4 and have had no problem until today when i went into the greenhouse this morning the lower leaves are tucked right under and towards the stems as if they are hugging themselves but they look very healthy. Could anyone tell me if they know what it is its not all the tomatoe plants just a few of them

I wouldn't worry, I've always had a few of mine do that after a cooler night and I've never had a problem. I always assumed that it was a way of them keeping in heat with a self hugging mechanism!

Leaf rolling is normal if they are dark green coloured.

Thankyou to you both for your answers im very grateful, i was worried it might be the leaf curl virus but im assuming it would affect them all if so, i have been misting the leaves and thought it might be something to do with this as i have only just started doing so and i have just been told i should'nt do you think this could be something to do with it. Thank you

Got any pictures Alison? It doesn't sound like anything to worry about, but I do wonder if you're watering too much - how big are the plants, and what variety? You don't need to mist tomato plants.

No some people mist to help set tomatoes and I doubt you've done anything. All tomato leaves curl at some point. Check them at night and you'll see it again. I don't bother misting tomatoes as I've never had a problem with them setting but I do it with greenhouse cukes to help control red spider. I also mist runner and French beans to stop flowers dropping of without setting.

I've had leaves roll up, and stems curl up, underneath.. initially thought it may be pests -but no sign and they're still growing away - the only thing that's been different recently is the GH dropping to 5C a few nights.

I've never misted tomatoes - tapping the stems is enough to disturb the pollen to fertilise them. Leaf curl is common and rarely really a problem.

Leaf curl providing the foliage is dark green is actually a good sign.

Thanks everyone for the replies it helped a lot.At least i got some sleep last night i was worrying they had a disease. Rusty lady i dont have pics as when i went in this morning the plants are back to normal isn't that really weird, ive stopped misting the leaves now. Im so relieved. Plants are about 10inches id say. Think they have got minds of their own. It was the yellow variety that was the worst.

They curl at night or when temperatures drop. Think of it as rolling up in a cardy or to go to sleep.

All my (dare I say it) moneymakers do it.. but oddly these are the ones where the branches are curling around too.

I have all my tomato plants supported by canes tied to a wire running the length of my greenhouse. first thing I do every time I enter is to give the wire a shake.

Today, shock horror, i found a tomato plant seems to have died back three or four inches from the top. None of the others seem to be affected so goodness knows what is going on. I have a sideshoot which should have been taken off sitting in reserve should it be needed.
