  • Tomato, Pepper and Chilli Disaster - Salvagable?

I have just got home from work to find all of my tomato, chilli and pepper plants have been totally scorched / have shrivelled up in the heat today

I put them into the blowaway (with door down but unzipped so it would flap around in the breeze) this morning before work, as I have done on any days where the temp was to be above 15 degrees. They all had a good water before I left, pots were heavy, I didn't think any would be at risk of drying out at all.

However, I think the temps have got even higher than expected today (about 25 degrees) and it must have got so hot in there. Some of the pots have dried up, some of the compost in pots is still moist. But ... the leaves are so damaged, some worse than others.

What on earth do I do? This is the first time I have grown these, I was so pleased with my progress, had given them lots of care and it seems line one hot day has wiped them out. The blowaways would have been in sun from about 10am until 3pm so maybe I need to move them to a shadier area when temps get this hot? I really don't know. At the moment I think there are a few plants which are done for, but hopefully the others I can just pick off the worst leaves and hope they recover?? I have given them all a good water now. Any advice appreciated.

Photos will be able to be seen on my blog (http://tiny*************.blogspot.com/) in a few minutes. I am just uploading them now (I couldn't figure out how to upload photos into his thread??).

I don't know why but it won't show my blog address properly. It is tiny kitchen garden, why 'kitchen garden' is censored I have no idea.

    Thanks

    Hi Wonky,
Don't panic, I think all the plants in the pictures stand a good chance of recovery. Even that red pepper.
I know I've had plants recover that looked worse than that.
You are however correct that they will need more shade in weather like this. You may find that covering the plastic cover with fleece leaving the door properly open might help. Alternatively you could probably even remove the cover at these temperatures.

    Good luck

Not allowed to mention K*tchen G*arden on GYO lol!

They look like they'll recover, might set them back a bit. Don't give them any direct sun for a while.

Don't give up on them, like the others have said a bit of TLC and they should be OK.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have calmed down a little now!

I have picked off the worse affected leaves so that the plants can rejuvenate (hopefully). I'll keep putting them out this week but Ill make sure to keep them out of direct sun and definitely not zipped up in the blowaway. Live and learn!

Take the plastic off on hot sunny days. Or, peg some shade over the top (I've used newspaper sheets, tea towels, anything you have)

The school seedlings will have perished too. They are in a plastic blowaway, same as you, but they have been locked inside the school for 12 days now with no water (luckily those are 'spare' seedlings, the main ones are in my gh at home)

I drape a voile curtain over blowaways when I know the sun's going to be on them and leave unzipped, obviously. Hope your plants make a good recovery, you'll be surprised how resilient they are and it might even make them hotter!
