  • Tomato Crisis!!!

We started off our tomatoes 7th March and they got off to a great start and then potted them on 5th April. They are in the greenhouse and every night they are wrapped up all snuggly in fleece as the nights have been a bit nippy. Our friends and family were admiring the little plants and everyone agreed they looked healthy. Two days ago a couple of plants looked a bit sick. Yesterday a few more plants were looking less than perky. I saw a few small green bugs on the leaves ? green fly. I sprayed with some soapy water. Today all my plants look ropey. Is this a disaster? Can I somehow save my precious tomato plants? Can someone out there help me PLEASE?!

    Hi and welcome Christine.

It sounds like your problem started before you sprayed, so it could be many things. Too much water, frost damage, or maybe even pests, but it seems a bit early for that.
    A picture would really help.

Did you spray the leaves with water and then leave them in the greenhouse? If it was sunny that could have scorched the leaves.

So many options as a possibility, but sounds like over watering. Hold off with any water and see if they pick up. If the leaves and stem are still nice and green then you can rule out sun scorch and frost. The other thing you might want to investigate is some sort of pest attacking the roots.

I just think it was too cold at nights in your (unheated?) greenhouse

Your soap solution could have been too strong. If there are only a few greenfly I prefer to scrape them off with a finger and thumb. How big are your plants, by the way?

My plants are quite big and tough - sown end Jan. some of them, and abotu 18" high and bushy with it. I still don't trust them in the cold greenhouse at hight, even with fleece. Too much to lose. However, I don't live in South Oxfordshire!
