  • Toilet rolls and mould

Apologies if this has been asked before but this is my first year using toilet roll holders to sow seedlings. So far things are working well but the rolls seem to have mould growing over them! Will this be a problem to my seedlings? Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening in the future? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the mould now?
    TIA

I'm sure I read that microwaving the loo rolls would stop mould - But I've been "sure" of lots of daft things that have turned out to be just vivid imagination!

I've got my sweetcorn in loo rolls for the first time... I had a lot of mushrooms pop up (OH was not impressed - they were in our bedroom) and then mould - they're now on the sunniest windowsill and both problems seem to have disappeared

Mould hasn't been a problem with my sweetcorn and beans.

I use them for lots of things and I've noticed some tubes get mould and other don't so was wondering if its anything to do with the brand used.

I used to have a leaky radiator in my room and found mushrooms under the bed once when I was a kid.

Similarly my Mrs wasnt impressed recently when I brought ants into the bedroom where we have the seed trays. We get decent results with our own soil mixed with ash and compost compared to MPC so mostly use that and brought in some ants with it which were on the floor and in the bed.

Ok so the first lot of broad beans I have sown are fine and will be planted out soon! My second lot have had the same mould issue on toilet rolls but I've noticed where the bean has swelled and is showing through the compost slightly some of the mould has spread onto that....is this going to decay the beans? Should I just take them out of the humid polytunnel and leave the outside to germinate now?

                            Mould on toilet rolls

Hi, I've been using toilet rolls to grow broad beans from seed in my polytunnel. The rolls had started getting mould on them and I was advised this was ok it wouldn't cause any problems and so far that batch has been fine, they are almost ready for planting out! My second lot I have done the same way but again the mould has started but this time it has crept across the compost and it looks like it's on one of the beans! Will this affect the bean? Decay it maybe?
