A forum I used to use had some people on there that tried growing their own baccy, but none seemed to quite mange to pull it off.

It is hard to grow from what I understand, as it needs a perfect environment to grow, high humidity and heat etc etc.

Being a dreaded smoker myself have given it much thought but found buying it online the easiest and cheapest option

        Good luck with it tho

Hi - Growing it is quite easy, but drying / curing is a bit tricky and you can end up with mouldy leaves if you don't have enough warmth and ventilation.

I've tried coltsfoot ('poor man's baccy') and red clover too.

Anything which bypasses customs & excise is worth a go ; )

ok then i'm going to give it a go, the seeds are pretty cheap so i'm not really losing anything other than a bit of time, if it works it'll save me a fortune

i have a good airing cupboard, i'm sure i can adapt to suit :-)

Is it legal to grow your own tobacco - don't you need a license?

Having said that I'm sure I saw a TV programme(The Victorian Kitchen Garden?) featuring this a few weeks ago.

You see it growing all over the place in Cyprus and I've always thought it would make a good garden plant - in a wild over grown tropical lushness sort of way.

Sorry to say I'm a slave to the evil weed myself

nope apparently you don't need a license and as long as you don't try selling it down the pub, it should all be ok

What a great idea. Think I'll give this a go too. After 30+ years on the old weed, and contributing to the governments coffers, I think it'd be dangerous to give up now!! Thanks for the idea Lynda66.

                            Hello lynda,
Not sure if you may have spotted this one already. BBC have a feature including a method on growing tobacco at the link below.

BBC - h2g2 - How To Grow Your Own Cigars

(Looks as though there may be some tax implications when growing ).
