  • Tiny green worms eating tomato leaves

I have grown tomatoes in my greenhouse for three years, using fresh grow bags every year and, so far, had a good crop each year. This year I noticed that the lower leaves were being eaten and thought at first that slugs/snails had got in. However on closer inspection I've found tiny green worms are doing the damage, so small they are difficult to see. Some are longer than others, which is how I saw them, but they are thin rather than grub like. I've now removed all infected leaves and the higher parts of the plants look healthy and fruit is setting. Has anybody else had a similar problem? Can I do anything else and, if I've not got rid of them, might they become interested in the toms?? Advice appreciated, thanks.

Those Tiny green worms are Caterpillars, the more they eat the bigger they will get.

You have done right by picking the leaves off, I have done the same, this gets rid of them.

They will have been laid by a moth at night.

Just water and continue to feed your plants, but keep your eye out for other muchings and inparticular look for caterpillar poo. This will look like small dark, black balls, any caterpillars will be above the poo.

    Welcome to the vine.

Thanks for your speedy reply! Does that mean that they are only interested in the leaves and not the fruit? Hope so. I had a few caterpillars last year but only noticed them by the time they had grown and, as you say, by signs of poo! They just seemed to eat leaves as I had a good crop of toms. I was concerned that this might be something more invasive that would get into the fruit.
