  • Tiny carrots & parsnips

I sowed my carrots (royal chantenay), parsnips (hollow crown) & leeks (musselburgh) (from seed) out on the 4th of march. They are growing but I only have tiny roots on my carrots & parsnips and my leeks look more like spring onions!

I know its been a bit harsh this year so I'll let them off a bit, but shouldn't they be bigger?

    Regards

Not at all. They all have a lot of growing to do yet. You won't be harvesting the parsnips and leeks untilk the autumn/winter. You can pull the carrots when they are big enough which will also thin them out for the remainder to fatten up.

I'm not growing parsnips but the carrots and leeks were sown a bit later and are a bit further along than yours (although it depends on your definition of "tiny" of course) - but not by much and I guess a lot depends on where you are and your individual growing conditions. Where are you gardening?

          Hello!

My parsnips are a bit bigger at about 2 & a 1/2 to 3 inches and the carrots are about an inch & a 1/2. I'm glad to hear they're okay, I worry about them too much!

I'm in North Lincolnshire. My veg plot is in my back garden, I've got two raised beds that are roughly 6 & 1/2 foot X 2 & a 1/2 each. I've also got a side garden as well & lots of pots with things in. The soil was claggy before I mixed loads of compost in with it & now its much better.

          Regards
