  • Three Year Old Asparagus Plants, any tips please?

Hi, I planted 6 three year old Asparagus plants about a week ago and the little sprouts have shot up very well. I have been told though that I should cut the first few sprouts right down to the bottom to encourage a thicker formation of the next growth sprouts. Would anyone be kind enough to let me have some tips please

I also put about 12 crowns into the bed and gave them alot of space between each plant, which seemed a little over board but I went with the guidance. But they take up alot of space!

    Thanks in advance.

It's always claimed asparagus doesn't transplant well so if you've managed that you've done well. Initial skinny shoots are best removed (by cutting just below the surface) in order to build up strength and obtain thicker shoots... usually you have to do for this for a couple of years - slow to develop! - but if these crowns are already 3 years old you may get worthwhile shoots before 2011 - see how it goes. Asparagus beds last for some 20 years, all the time developing, which is why initially you space widely. An important aspect is to keep the bed scrupulously well weeded without disturbing the asparagus roots and to feed generously each winter (the only part of my garden that receives commercial manure guaranteed weed-free - local stable manure sets too many weed seeds...). Repays all the fuss in time! b.

Thats great Bazzaboy, the tips are much appreciated!!

I guess it's a gradual process bring them up to speed and I will most certainly keep the bed well weeded and feed. I also have kept them covered in horticultural fleece but used small poles to keep it off the asparagus so they have room to grow, I am afraid of some late frosts getting them.

I will keep you posted mate if thats ok?

      Kind Regards

      Edward
