  • Are these courgettes?

After giving me endless neuroses - and forum members much irritation - my courgettes are finally fruiting, however, there's a new twist: my courgettes are having an identity crisis. Do female courgettes look like this?

And two of my courgette plants have male and female flowers different to the three other courgette plants which are like the above:

The first courgette in this post has very thick spikes on its stems, while the second one is more furry rather than spiky. If you refer to this earlier post the larger plant developed into the first picture here, and the runt one corresponds to the second set of pictures here.

I'm confused they should look so different to each other, as they were from the same seed packet (although i did purchase the seeds from a market rather than proper seed company)...

Here is a female flower from the furrier of the plants (second set of pictures), the fruiting bud is difficult to see here, but it's similar to a baby cucumber:

It looks like the top one is going to be a round ball shaped courgette - and the other may well be a traditional shaped one! It is a bit early to tell on the lower pictures as the fruit is only tiny at the moment.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks Jeanied, wasn't sure as they didn't resemble the courgette flowers in books/on the interweb.

Forgot to mention these are trailing varieties (which i originally tried to train up trellises, which they quickly outgrew!).

That's because they are only buds!! When they open you will recognise them as the big yellow flowers that you have seen illustrated.
