    Is there anything i can plant, that does NOT need netted?

    hiya, first year in allotment, all going well, been advised by the guys there that its a bad area for root fly, so everythings covered.

    My problem, got loads of space, and no net left!

    Is there anything i can plant now, that does not require netting?

    Runner beans , french beans ......
    my list of pests to be netted against.
    pigeons- brassicas, fruit bushes and peas
    cabbage whites-brassicas
    Allium leaf miner- fleece at certain times of the year, all alliums
    Rabbits- rabbit proof fence round the whole plot

      I never net courgettes, squash, spinach, parsnips, chard, onions, garlic and leeks. One year I had to net my runner beans. We have rabbits, mice/voles, wood pigeons, seagulls and a variety of other birds on the allotment. But this year I am looking forward to growing cabbages, PSB, and kale and looking forward to using a net!

        Courgettes and squashes won't need netting and take up a fair bit of room, though you probably only need maximum 2 per person. Could still sow some now!

        As said before, beans (runners, frenchies) but also sweetcorn and tomatoes. Might get away with sowing sweetcorn, but you'll need to get some tom plants (a carboot would be cheapest).

          hey splatcat

          next time you see some guys putting up scaffolding see if you can get a roll of their netting there is loads and loads on a roll and you will prob have difficulty using it all!

              No nets on parsnips, potatoes, salads, beetroot, French beans, Runner beans, squash and onions on my garden.

                I don't own any netting. So for me, everything is unnetted - companion planting, cds, and suffering the occasional loss is my current method. When I lose something substantially I'll invest in an appropriate net, but until I do I won't spend the money. There seems to be very little netting going on (bar anti-pigeon netting) on our allotment so I wonder if the steady wind there keeps things moving.

                The only thing so far I've lost to pests is seedlings to ninja slugs in my blowaway and something (suspect rodent) started eating my courgettes last autumn.
