  • Testing chilli heat

Is there another way of doing it other than tasting it?

I'm aware that heat can vary, even on the same plant - and some chillies may be hot whilst others are considerably milder.

I ask, becasue whilst making chutney yesterday I thought I'd use some of myTwilight, Purple Tiger and Cayenne peppers from the plants in the garden. I chopped them up, and then tasted each - and they were all hot thankfully. Now, I like heat and lots of it - but how would someone with a more delecate palate test the heat of a chilli?

The Scoville scale's fine, but when talking about the milder end you can still get some with no heat at all.

I'm quite happy to keep tasting mine, but as I say for the more delicate is there another way?

i lick them when chopping, like this weekend I used one from a Piglet Willie Fat Bang and it was mild, and another from another Fat Bang the next day and it was hot hot hot - so I only used 1/2 of the second chili in the meal. Could have got away with 1/4.

I think for those of a more delicate palette, they possibly might not eat chili at all? Or grow a more milder variety.

We like the surprise as we all like fairly hot so OH just sticks em in and we find out when the meal is done

I don't eat chillis, so I make the OH test them, and taste test whatever I'm making. For the most part though, I don't do anything with them, just grow them.

I test mine on MrH and eldest son. If they go purple then they are hot enough

I bit into one of my Jalepenos at the weekend and it had no heat at all, so I ate the whole thing. OH thought I'd gone barmy!! I hope the rest are hotter, otherwise I might as well have grown peppers!!

I'm sure I read somewhere that "starving" them of water (only watering when they look droopy) increases the heat.

I also dreamt I was being recruited by a secret organisation the other night.

Oh? That's interesting, might be worth a try, cheers dude.

As for secret organisations...did it have anything to do with a certain lemonade and stripey pjamas?

Aye, I've just used 4 of my killers tonight in some chili and garlic spray - I used 1/4 of one for a curry tonight and that was lovely and hot......
