  • Tempted to remove netting.

After reading a previous thread about the lack of butterflies, I have to say I haven't seen any this year. Do you think it is too risky to remove the netting off my brassicas. I was just wondering if anyone has either removed their netting or is growing without it.

I remove mine during the day when I'm pottering.. only thing nibbling my brassicas at the moment are slugs.

I saw two CWB's in March I think - none since.

Not using any netting this year but if you have it on, I wouldn't take it off yet.
Same as Jax, I'm having problems with whitefly.

I've removed my netting because my cabbage is 32" and calabrese is 40" high and pushing against the top. Have seen three or four C/Whites but no sign of any eggs/caterpillars.

Why do you want to remove it? Crops too tall?

I found cabbage white larvae on the brassicas in the windowsill

I brought them inside as there wasn't a small cage for them to be grown up.

I've been gradually removing netting from the bigger plants like sprouts and caulis. Wasn't put on to deter cabbage whites (which don't seem to have been a problem this year) but to keep pigeons off the seedlings.
I've had some removed for a couple of days and up to now, touch wood, everything is ok. Maybe there is more for pigeons to eat at this time of year so they have left my plants alone?
Removing mesh little by little as it isn't exactly the most pretty thing to have strewn around the plot.

                    Netting

I have kept my netting on my purple broccoli sprouting as we have white butterflies around every day.

You lucky lot.Remove the net if you want to.Last year I lost the battle with little b******s.This year I decided to not to grow any brassicas but...I noticed 2 volunteer(?) brassica seedlings on the onion patch(haven't got a clue what they are-either cabbage or sprouts)and left them to their own devices.Yesterday I had a look-yes,bloody butterflies foun them-4 caterpillars squished.

We've had a few cabbage whites as well, but more worried about the pigeon so my netting is staying firmly on! I would like to eat a cabbage this year - lost the lot to slugs and pigeons last year and my PSB which had survived the onslaught fell over under the weight of snow and died before sprouting!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

Cheers guys, although my PSB & Caulis are trying to push their way out, I will leave the netting on. I thought 3 foot high would have been plenty but obviously not. Thanks again.
