  • swiss chard surviving winter

    hi guys,

ive been growing four swiss chard plants since outsidee since July, so that the've put plenty of growth on before winter. my problem is that i think one frost was a bit too bad for them and all the leaves from my plants wilted over, but they didnt go brown or anything. Luckily this prompted me into covering them with fleece before the snow came. my question is will my chard recover from this? i thought chard plants were quite winter hardy. how do other people get there chard thru winter?
im annoyed because i havent actually tried any of my swiss chard yet so i'll be disappointed if they dont survive.

They should be OK - some of the leaves go brown but you can pull those off and some new ones should appear with the milder weather. The game is only over when they start to flower next year!

      ditto that

Even if you lose all the leaves to a frost, the roots will survive and throw out new leaves in the spring
You could put some netting or even newspaper over the ones you are planning to eat soon

Chard is as tough as old boots. My old boots survive the winter with no bother!
I've kept chard plants going for 2 seasons.

I grow chard in big pots and always bring some inside the greenhouse over winter. This means an early start and lots of luscious new growth in early spring.

I had to fleece mine yesterday because the sparrows were eating it Despite having put seeds and peanuts out
