    Sweetcorn in Toilet roll tubes?

    Totally ran out of decent sized/deepish pots and I'm wanting to start my sweetcorn this weekend so was just wondering if anyone had started them in loo roles tubes and were they successful?

    Any advice would be nice, thanks.

    I use newspaper pots.

    Depending on the size of the 'tube' you can control howmuch compost to use - I tend to use a high-glass to form the shape - provides the sweetcorn with a bit more compost that you could get into a toilet roll.

      Yes and yes.

      Keep them well damp in the last few days before planting out and then ensure that the top of the tube is nicely below soil level or the cardboard will 'wick' moisture away from the roots.

      Sometimes you get tiny little mushrooms appear on the tubes before planting...they are nothing to worry about!

      I ALWAYS use loo rolls for sweetcorn.

        Excellent news people. Thanks for the link as well Baldy.

        Was thinking get them sown now in the middle of April and they should be ready to plant out at the start of June when the weather (hopefully) will be a lot better.

          Yes I used toilet roll inserts for sweetcorn last year and had the most successful crop ever.
          Been saving them all winter and they are being used again this year for marigolds and sweetcorn.

            Yep! Always use loo rolls for my Sweetcorn, and plant the whole kit n caboodle when it's time for them to go out!

            A little tip! Bang the loo rolls in the microwave for 20 seconds before filling with compost and sowing as this sterilises them and prevents mould, algy and spores growing on them!

              I use the plastic squash cups that you buy in the pound shops. A stack of about 50 I think. They are really pliable making it easy to get the plant out.
              Then I recycle the cups

                  I use the plastic cups from our drinks machine, I don't use the machine but plenty of others in the offices do. They are used to seeing me rummaging through the bins collecting them by now, I just use a hot nail to melt 2 holes in the bottom.

                  The other thing I use is this:

                  the potta system · how it works

                  which I won in one of the magazines as a giveaway prize and now I only use that to plant my seeds in using old newspapers and the clear plastic tubs you buy fruit in from the supermarket.

                      No, but then you'll be in very good company instead! I always use them and they work really well as long as the tops are buried when you plant them out.

                      Ready access to many many loo rolls is something I will miss from working in a busy shared office. I used to get about 10/day - now it's far fewer just being at home!

                        Knew I'd got that stash of loo roll inserts for some reason! That's what I'll be doing with them this Saturday then!

                          I think sweet corn doesn't like root disturbance - that's the point of paper pots or loo roll. Putting them in plastic cups won't help in this regard.

                          Having said that plastic cups doesnt mean they won't grow...

                            Also yes and yes
                            Only grown sweetcorn twice in pots in my liitle potland but yea, worked both times and with a decent result.
                            Damn i love toilet rolls .)
