Sweetcorn problem!

    Sweetcorn problem!

    Just returned home from work to find nearly all my sweetcorn plants have been blown over and roots are showing on the surface They are planted in a raised bed. Is there anything i can do to rescue them? Or are they doomed?

    Put them back, puddle them in really well.

    If you earth sweetcorn up a bit, they will anchor themselves better.

      You could perhaps pop in a small cane by each plant - one of the thin, green type will do the job. We garden on two sites and both are incredibly windy so I always stick one of these canes in. Useless for when they're very tall, but they tend to have developed a strong enough root system by then.

        Thanks guys. They're about four feet tall so looks like the roots haven't taken properly.

          Maybe try putting a physical barrier infront, like a hazel hurdle, to diffuse the wind.

            So glad I read this! My neighbours garden umbrella blew loose and ended up in my sweetcorn patch! knocked 5 of them flat grrrrrr!

              To save using an individual cane for each plant you could add a couple of canes to the windward side and put a couple of strings across to hold others up! Earth them up like tatties to allow them to establish new roots.

                It's windy here but I have been fortunate and it has been by absolute luck rather than design. My sweetcorn is planted in a garland raised bed with a frame, when I planted my corn in it I covered it with a square of green plastic mesh to keep the cats off (my cats!). The sweetcorn grew through it and before I realised it was going to be impossible to remove it without damaging the corn, so instead I just move it up the frame and it's acting as a support. I've just taken a pic as I'm probably not explaining myself very well.

                It's really held up to the wind so I'll definitely do it this way again!

                    Ah some great advice, thanks. This happened to me yesterday as well. It was pretty bad wasn't it?

                    The corn at home possibly gets less light and seems to be very much taller than the stuff on the lottie, which is really stocky.

                    I thought I had lost it - just tied it to sticks and prayed.

                    Thanks all, will earth up when the rain stops.

                          put the cane in.. .they're pretty hardy plants.... (trust me on this!) oh and don't ask lol
