    Sweet Potato Cuttings?

    I was reading in my polytunnel book last night that August is the time to take sweet potatoes cuttings and plant them up for next year... the idea is that you cut the 'vines', put them in water, wait until you have a root system appear, then plant into pots to overwinter...

    Has anyone tried this? I'm interested to know, as I would like to grow sweet potatoes again and this seems like a cheaper way (rather than buying the slips/plants again next year)....

    I tried taking cuttings like those last year, but they didn't root. This thread explains how some people have tried getting slips from the tubers, http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ers_62692.html.
    I'm thinking if they did root at this time of year the plants would be quite big before you could plant them out, I suppose it depends whether you can keep your polytunnel frost free through the winter. I used my smallest tubers to produce my slips for this year (none were proper size anyway).
    I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

      I'm not sure about the frost free thing, but I have a small 'blowaway' inside the tunnel for putting seeds in, early in the year... I could put cuttings in there...

      I might give it a go and see what happens...
